Grandpa George & William H “Mac ” Macklin cut fire wood & sold it to make a living during the depression of 20’s – 30’s at 14505 E. Sprague, Opportunity Wa. Later while Mac was building ships at Todd shipyard in Seattle during WW II, George started blacksmithing plow shares for many farmers, among other things. George passed away in 1946 and Mac established MACKLIN WELDING. Mac had our landmark neon sign built by a couple of Central Valley school mates Luke & Chuck Williams which later established a company called American Sign and Indicator right here in Spokane Valley which designed, built, sold time & temperature as well as first large arena score boards shipping allĀ over the world. Mac also took care of farmers, designed the first solid frame trailer hitch for uni-body cars of that time & became a job shop for Union Iron works which later became Coeur d’Alenes Metal . In the mid 60’s the steel fab & erecting business got to large for Mac to handle , so he chose instead to establish the largest “Hitch Centers” in inland NW. Early 70’s Mac’s son Bill went to welding & business school at SCC, went to work for his dad doing numerous tasks like fabricating hundreds of trailer hitches, trailers, parts for Fiberform boat factory (later Bayliner), aux fuel tanks for motor homes, trailers, welding on aluminum molds for Kaiser among many other things 1977 Mac hired Zack & 1980 Mac retired. Bill, Zack & others kept the Hitch Center growing. In mid 80’s Bill & Zack designed system where snow plow owners could Quick release the plow attachment from the pickup in the off season , 1989 Bill bought his first Boss V plow – 34 years later with 11 dealers over Washington & north Idaho Macklin is largest north west Distributor for Boss snow removal equipment. Early 90’s Bill’s son John was 7, Bill started letting him “play” with the mig welder, making all sorts of little figures out of scrap iron. Today four generations later, the Macklin family is still helping people with large Hitch Center, utility trailer sales and service, snowplow sales and service and much more.
